Have you ever seen a sculptor? Before a sculptor creates a statue out of clay or stone, what does he have in front of him?

Nothing but a lump of clay or a piece of stone. Yet, with patience, dedication, and hard work, the sculptor transforms it into something beautiful. He carefully shapes every part, giving it form and meaning.

Isn’t that exactly what a teacher does?

A teacher takes a human being—like an unshaped lump of clay—and, through knowledge, guidance, discipline, and care, shapes that person into an ideal and responsible citizen. Identifying the strengths and weaknesses within a student and shaping their personality through education, so that they can succeed in real life, is truly an act of creation.

The great responsibility of shaping the responsible citizens of tomorrow rests on the shoulders of teachers. That is why it is rightly said, “Without a Guru, life remains incomplete and meaningless.”

In India, Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on 5th September. The birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of independent India, is celebrated as Teachers’ Day in India. Dr. Radhakrishnan served both as the Vice President and the President of India. Yet, despite holding these prestigious positions, he continued to be remembered and respected above all as an ideal teacher.

Teachers’ Day began to be celebrated so that future generations would always remember the important and respected place that teachers hold in Indian society, and understand the immense role they play in shaping the future of the nation.

In our culture, Gurus and teachers have held a place of great importance since ancient times. Lord Shri Ram, Lord Shri Krishna, the Pandavas, and many others would go to their Gurus’ ashrams to learn scriptures, warfare, politics, and various other skills. They always respected their Gurus’ guidance and never acted against their teachings. It was this discipline and guidance that helped them grow into great and accomplished individuals.

Even in the making of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, his Gurus and teachers played a valuable role. Their guidance and teachings contributed significantly to shaping his character and personality.

Even in more recent times, we can see the importance of a teacher in the life of a successful person. In Sachin Tendulkar’s journey to greatness, his coach and teacher, Ramakant Achrekar, played a crucial role. His guidance, discipline, and constant encouragement helped shape Sachin into one of the greatest cricketers of all time. 

Our first teachers are our parents. They are the ones who teach us how to walk and how to speak. After them, teachers enter our lives. While teaching us the alphabet and the basics of education, they are also shaping the human being within us.

They do not merely teach us how to speak; they teach us how to speak well and with kindness. They do not simply teach us mathematics; they teach us how to add and subtract the joys and sorrows that life brings our way.

Teachers do not teach us only drawing and painting; through those lessons, they help us understand how to add colours to the little moments and experiences of life. They do not teach us science merely as a subject; they teach us how to apply a scientific outlook to our everyday lives.

At school, they do not teach us only how to play games; they teach us how to face the challenges and difficulties that life puts before us.

That is why I said earlier that our teachers perform the incredibly difficult and meaningful task of giving the right shape to a lump of clay and turning it into a beautiful and worthy creation.

For our parents, we may be the only children they have to teach and guide. But a teacher has so many children to teach at school. Teaching all these students, keeping an eye on them, guiding them towards good values and discipline, and paying attention to each child’s progress—teachers carry so many responsibilities on their shoulders.

For a teacher, every student is equally important. They do not discriminate between their students. They treat every child with the same care, attention, and affection.

In many schools across India, students take on the role of teachers on Teachers’ Day. They stand before their classmates, teach them just like their teachers do, and get a small glimpse of what it means to be a teacher. Through this tradition, students express their respect, gratitude, and appreciation for their teachers.

Sometimes we feel upset when our teachers scold us or punish us. But do they do all this just for fun? Certainly not.

Just as they explain things to us with love and patience, there are times when they have to be strict with us so that we truly understand our mistakes. Without that firmness, some lessons may never stay with us.

Even when they punish us, it hurts them too. But they do it because they want us to grow into better human beings, develop discipline, and never fall short when we face the challenges of life in the future.

After all, if we listen to our teachers and follow their guidance, why would they ever need to punish us?

Teachers also play a very important role in the progress of a nation. An ideal teacher shapes countless precious gems—students who go on to make their country proud and earn recognition for it across the world.

Through the tireless efforts of teachers, we get good scientists, dedicated doctors, talented sportspersons, and professionals in countless other fields. In this way, a strong and capable nation is built. A country whose teachers are dedicated and excellent will always continue to progress.

From today onwards, let us all promise to respect our teachers, follow their guidance, and obey their instructions.
